Airtel Uganda launches VoLTE technology

Airtel Uganda, has introduced VoLTE (Voice over LTE) a system that automatically enables High Definition for a clearer voice call coupled with a non-interruption of videos.

According to Airtel Uganda Managing Director, Manoj Murali, the change benefits only those with iPhones for now, while the rest will have to wait until their handsets are compatible with VoLTE.

“Users can experience this technology once they have a VoLTE enabled handset and a 4G Sim Card. The user needs to update their mobile device operating system (OS) to enable VoLTE,”Manoj remarked.

“We continue to challenge ourselves, Innovate and give more Ugandans reasons to Imagine. VoLTE is an innovation that will allow our customers to make and receive high quality voice calls without any disruption to their 4G (LTE) browsing experiences,” added the Airtel Uganda Managing Director.

According to Joweria Nabakka, Head Data, Devices at Airtel Uganda, all Airtel customers, with compatible devices, can make clear calls on the 4G network because the call traffic is carried on the LTE network infrastructure.

“VoLTE that has been launched will start functioning with iPhones .The handset must be able to have an option for VoLTE. We are still in touch with the makers of other phone brands to see to it that they can have that capability and we shall announce when that has been done”, said Nabakka.

VoLTE automatically enables High Definition for a clearer voice call experience with the same call rate as normal calls according to Nicolas Jjuuko, the Network Engineer at Airtel Uganda.

What the High Definition Voice calls entail are crystal clear conversations as if you are right next to each other, efficient multi-tasking: do more at the same time such as hold simultaneous voice and data session and an improved call setup.

This latest innovation by Airtel Uganda follows the successful announcement of the Brand’s new theme, A Reason to Imagine that is aimed at delivering relevant solutions that enhance communication using voice, data, and other services offered.

Meanwhile, the telecommunication giant has secured the Low Band - Sub 1 GHz spectrum, 100 MHz (1x100 MHz) of spectrum in the 3500 MHz time division duplex (TDD) band, allowing the company to leverage the immense potential of this frequency range for delivering high-speed connectivity to its customers and two blocks of 2x250 MHz FDD Spectrum, equating to 500 MHz of paired spectrum.
