SpaceX has been granted a licence to allow it to launch its Starlink low earth orbit satellite broadband service in Mongolia.
A report from Reuters cites Minister for Digital Development and Communications Uchral Nyam-Osor as saying: ‘A network of fibre-optic cables already provides wide-reaching access to high speed internet across Mongolia, but this technology will provide greater access to hard-to-reach areas. Herders, farmers, businesses and miners living and working across our vast country will be able to access and use information from all over the world to improve their lives.’
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Mongolia was home to around 455,000 fixed broadband subscriptions at the end of March 2023, the vast majority of these being fibre-based connections in urban areas.
