Drei signs FTTH partnership agreement with oGIG

Hutchison Drei Austria has announced the signing of a new wholesale partnership agreement with Osterreichische Glasfaser-Infrastrukturgesellschaft (oGIG). Drei plans to launch commercial services over the oGIG open access fibre-optic network next year, with a view to reaching around three million households across the country (around 25% of the total).

‘By setting up a nationwide 5G network and expanding our fibre-optic partnerships, we are gradually turning the whole of Austria into a surfing paradise. Every household and every company has different requirements for its internet connection,’ said Drei’s CEO Rudolf Schrefl, adding: ‘With 5G, 5G+ and fibre-optics, we can meet all requirements in the future. Through the partnership with the oGIG, we are once again significantly accelerating the rollout of our fibre-optic range in Austria. The use of an open network by several providers is the most sensible way to do this, not only ecologically, but also economically.’

With equity of EUR1 billion (USD1.1 billion) from Allianz Capital Partners, oGIG is aiming to supply around one million households and businesses with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services by 2030. As a pure infrastructure provider, the firm already enables more than 20 ISPs to supply services over its open access networks. oGIG currently supplies more than 82,000 households with FTTH and is developing more than 70 community projects throughout Austria, with a further 90,000 connections expected to be under construction by the end of the year.
