VMO2 begins selling XGS-PON based services

Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has announced the commercialisation of XGS-PON technology for end users. With the operator having previously revealed in November 2022 that it had switched on the technology over its live full fibre network for a select group of trial users, it has said these trials proved so successful that it has now moved on to selling the service more widely.

It noted that XGS-PON will initially underpin its fixed broadband services which use the new full fibre network operated by nexfibre, the joint venture company set up by VMO2’s parent companies Liberty Global and Telefonica, as well as InfraVia Capital Partners; VMO2 is nexfibre’s anchor wholesale tenant and network construction partner. nexfibre’s network rollout is said to be ramping up and on target to deliver full fibre connectivity to five million premises by the end of 2026.

Meanwhile, with nexfibre’s network build reported to be ‘already well underway’ as per a press release issued by VMO2 regarding its XGS-PON launch, the latter said that the development ‘marks a major moment for the nexfibre team as customers can now start connecting to its network all while build ramps up’.
