Comcast upgrades Gigabit Pro speeds to 10Gbps via FTTH

Comcast Corp (Xfinity) has announced that it has increased the transmission speeds supported by its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH)-based Gigabit Pro service to 10Gbps/10Gbps (downlink/uplink). The ISP says the upgrade ‘is available in all the markets we serve’. Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer for Comcast Cable, commented: ‘It is a culmination of years of research, technological breakthroughs and massive investments – more than USD20 billion since 2018 alone – in development and infrastructure.’

While the latest upgrade utilises fibre infrastructure, Comcast has no plans to ignore its cable broadband infrastructure. Indeed, the cableco says it aims to deploy DOCSIS 4.0 connectivity before the end of 2023. ‘Our network is architected to give us options to deliver a great experience over both HFC and FTTH technologies,’ Mr Nafshi added.

Comcast is currently understood to offer FTTH connectivity in selected parts of Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, Nashville, Knoxville, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Miami and West Palm Beach.
