Movistar and Tigo explore infrastructure sharing in Colombia

Colombian mobile providers Movistar and Tigo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pursue a network sharing arrangement via a jointly-owned infrastructure company.

While the operators will continue to compete against each other in both the consumer and wholesale telecom services sectors, they will explore mutually beneficial ways of sharing their access networks while retaining full independence over their respective business strategies.

CommsUpdate reports that if the operators reach an agreement on network sharing, they estimate that coverage would be improved across around 10% of Colombia’s territory, with quality optimised across more than 700 municipalities. Additionally, the infrastructure joint venture would become a special purpose vehicle for future 5G rollouts.
