Egypt: Telecom Egypt, Orange, Etisalat, and Vodafone commit to renewable energies

The Egyptian government is stepping up initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in a context marked by climate change. Cairo is working to greenify all of its sectors of activity.

Egyptian telecom operators Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, Etisalat, and Orange recently signed green energy acquisition agreements with the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA). The agreements were signed on Wednesday, May 7, in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energies.

This initiative is part of the Egyptian government's commitment to supporting clean energy initiatives in various sectors to reduce carbon emissions, in line with Egypt's 2050 National Climate Strategy. Cairo aims to increase the share of renewable energies in the national energy mix to 42% by 2035, up from 20% in 2022.

The partnership with telecom operators should help accelerate the achievement of the government's climate objectives, given that the sector is one of the largest consumers of electricity. For their part, telecom operators will be able to reduce their long-term energy costs while minimizing their impact on the environment.
