Costa Rica’s state utility/telecoms firm Grupo ICE and its Radiografica Costarricense (RACSA) unit staged a 5G proof of concept (POC) trial at the National Stadium in La Sabana. The network is capable of delivering transmission speeds of 1.5Gbps (downlink) and 100Mbps (uplink). Marco Acuna, President of Grupo ICE, commented: ‘The process to offer 5G is progressing solidly and within the planned deadlines, in accordance with the objectives of our corporate strategy. As we communicated, Costa Ricans will be able to enjoy this technology in a few months, backed by the experience of ICE and RACSA.’
Grupo ICE has reiterated its intention to offer 5G connectivity to private business networks before the end of this year, with a focus on government clients, alongside the industrial, agricultural, logistics, SME and corporate segments. A commercial rollout, meanwhile, is expected to take place in 2024. RACSA, which has been accused of under-utilising its 5G-suitable spectrum, currently holds a 100MHz block of 3.5GHz spectrum.
