Viaplay’s paying subscriber total rose by 60% in the year to March 31.
According to the company’s latest results, it ended the first quarter with a total of 7,643,000, up from 4,783,000 in Q1 2022. In Q1 alone, it added 325,000 customers.
In the Nordics, Viaplay’s sales increased by 35.6%, from SEK1,211 million (€106.9 million) in Q1 2022 to SEK1,682 million in the first quarter of this year. The number of subscribers increased by 32.5% to 4,738,000 over the same period.
Meanwhile, on the international front, its sales increased by more than sevenfold, from SEK91 million in Q1 2022 to SEK671 million in the first quarter of this year. The number of subscribers increased by 140% over the same period to 2,905,000, with Poland and the Netherlands being the main drivers for growth.
Viaplay’s net sales in Q1 amounted to SEK4,537 million, compared to SEK3,324 million a year earlier. Its net loss of -SEK288 million contrasted with a profit of SEK483 million in Q1 2022.
In his comments on the results, Viaplay’s president and CEO Anders Jensen said: “We are growing in line with our expectations to reach the target of 4 million (international) subscribers by end of the year. We also added 113,000 Viaplay subscribers in the Nordics in Q1, which is line with our ambition to add 400,000 new subscribers in 2023 and reach our year-end target of 5 million subscribers”.
