Tango and Telindus to shut down 3G network in January 2024

Tango and Telindus will switch off their 3G network in January 2024 and use the spectrum to strengthen capacity on the 5G network, parent company Proximus Luxembourg has announced.

Whereas Tango has seen 5G data traffic ‘explode’ since the network’s launch in 2020 – volumes increased ten-fold in 2022 alone – the 3G network (launched in 2003) has become obsolete and now accounts for less than 1% of total traffic, it highlighted. As well as improving energy efficiency, the move will enable the company to ramp up 5G deployment to achieve nationwide coverage during the current year. Customers with 3G handsets will still be able to make calls and send texts over the company’s 2G network.
