Vodafone Spain has revealed plans to work with AST SpaceMobile to trial satellite-based data and voice services, including verification trials of mobile broadband services capable of connecting directly to standard 2G, 4G and 5G phones without modification. Whilst the collaboration will need the requisite regulatory approval, nonetheless Vodafone Spain is keen to explore satellite connectivity as a means to provide voice calls, SMS, emergency services, broadband internet connection and IoT services. It is understood that the two companies intend to develop a network architecture that will seamlessly switch between satellite and mobile terrestrial networks to provide mobile coverage even in the most remote or difficult-to-access areas and in maritime corridors.
Commenting on the joint venture initiative, Julia Velasco, Network Director of Vodafone Spain, said: ‘It is a revolutionary solution that could complement traditional coverage and is perfectly suited to the home and business scenario in rural Spain. Our aim is to ensure that everyone has access to the services and benefits of a digital society, no matter where they live.’
