Poland set for 5G auction

Poland’s Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) has begun consultations on the terms of an auction for 5G licences.

According to Wirtualne Media, they will last until January 31, 2023 but may be repeated. It adds that UKE expects to complete the auction by August next year.

All told, there will be four 80 MHz blocks in the 3480-3800 MHz band on offer. The starting price for each block will be PLN450 million (€96.1 million) and licences valid for 15 years. Jacek Oko, the president of UKE, believes the Polish state could earn as much as PLN2 billion from the auction.

In Oko’s view, there is a strong need for the development of high-speed internet services in Poland using 5G technology. At present 3 million households cannot be provided with services of over 30 Mbps and over 6 million have no access to fibre. As a result, it hard to expect every household to be reached by fibre.
