Airtel launches fiber-based services in Kampala

Airtel Uganda has launched its first fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services for residential and business users. The new service, dubbed Airtel Xtreme, is available at 125 locations in the capital Kampala and there are plans for further expansion in Kampala and beyond. Connectivity is being offered at peak download rates of 10Mbps, 20Mbps and 50Mbps, according to a report from Capital Radio Uganda.

Henry Njoroge, Marketing Director at Airtel, said: ‘Our fibre-to-the-home service is designed for all homes and businesses with multiple internet needs across multiple devices through a reliable fibre cable connection … We are putting the right physical and digital infrastructure in place to support the growing communication needs of Greater Kampala residents and businesses. Airtel is laying more fibre, upgrading sites, and innovating solutions ahead of the needs of our customers.’

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Airtel already offers fixed broadband connectivity via its 4G LTE network.
