Africell Angola announced the official launch of its mobile network services in the city and province of Benguela on 2 December. The operator, which launched services in the capital Luanda in April this year, has also released a promotional video confirming that it has reached six million subscriptions. The network – based on 5G-ready Nokia-supplied technology – is scheduled for launch in Lubango province next.
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database shows that Africell took a 25.7% market share by end-September 2022, having swiftly overtaken Movicel for second place in the Angolan mobile sector in terms of subscriptions, behind market leader Unitel. Africell (Angola) is part of the UK-headquartered Africell group – backed by Lebanese and US investors – with active mobile divisions in Gambia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
