Somalia’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has begun the process of awarding official mobile spectrum licences to the country’s telecoms operators.
The move follows the finalisation and approval of regulations concerning the allocation and licensing of radio frequency spectrum, as well as network interconnection, on 24 September. According to the regulator’s website, it has so far awarded official mobile spectrum licences to Hormuud Telecom (3 November), Golis Telecommunications (23 November) and Telesom (23 November). Developing Telecoms cites a statement from Hormuud as saying that it was allocated spectrum in the 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 2600MHz and 3.5GHz bands, although the operator did not state how much it paid for the frequencies.
