5G to launch in Macau next week

Macau is set to get its first commercial 5G services next week after the government awarded operating licences to Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau (CTM) and China Telecom Macau.

CTM has already built out a network with full indoor and outdoor coverage across the entire territory and plans to launch on Monday 14 November. Its Non Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) infrastructure has delivered download speeds of up to 1.6Gbps, it says. The firm will expand its 3-2-1 tariffs, which offer roaming between Macau, Hong Kong and mainland China, to 5G customers. Meanwhile, it has so far secured international 5G roaming agreements with 78 operators in 77 countries.

China Telecom has not yet announced a 5G launch date. As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Macau’s two other mobile network operators (MNOs), Hutchison 3 and SmarTone, chose not to apply for 5G licences.
