TIM completes 3G shutdown

Telecom Italia (TIM) has completed the phased switch-off of its 3G network which it started in June. It is now able to re-purpose its 3G spectrum to support 4G and 5G services.

TIM’s 2G network remains active for users with older handsets, while those with newer devices can use VoLTE for voice calls.

The firm launched its first UMTS-based services in 2004 and had expected to close the 3G network by end-June, but was ordered by the regulator to postpone the move for several months to give its customers and MVNO partners more time to prepare for the shutdown.
