Telesur kicks off ‘Phase 3’ FTTH rollout in Nickerie

State-owned fixed and mobile operator Telecommunicatiebedrijf Suriname (Telesur) has embarked on a new phase of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband network deployment, officially termed ‘Phase 3’. The project has been officially launched by President Chandrikapersad Santokhi in Nickerie, in the west of the country, where 2,065km of fibre cables will be deployed, reports news site Cultura, adding that another location, Moengo, will receive FTTH connections via 160km of fibre. Previous FTTH projects launched in 2019 did not reach completion of all original targets due to disruption in 2020-21 caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On its website, Telesur shows that its FTTH footprint is being expanded across the capital Paramaribo alongside areas including Nickerie, Coronie, Saramacca, Wanica, Para, Commewijne, Marowijne and Brokopondo, following initial surveys carried out by the telco in these areas in June-October. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database shows that Telesur officially completed a fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) rollout project in December 2019, while in October that year it also began expanding its existing limited FTTH coverage in districts around the capital and coastal areas, eventually resulting in a comprehensive upgrade of its fixed broadband service range in January 2021, with standard packages featuring data speeds up to 500Mbps.
