Jordan marks World Post Day with 1st robot parcel delivery

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) delivered a postal parcel using a robot for the first time in celebration of World Post Day, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

“Pepper Robot”, which interacts in English via voice command, successfully delivered a parcel to its owner in an experiment conducted by the TRC in cooperation with Princess Sumaya University.

The commission organized a ceremony on Sunday to mark World Post Day, which falls on the anniversary of the founding of the Universal Postal Union in 1874. The ceremony was attended by representatives of postal services in Jordan and a number of media outlets.

During the ceremony, Director of the commission’s Postal Regulatory Unit Sahem Al-Tarawneh said that the postal sector “is one of the most vital sectors globally and locally”.

A total of 203 postal companies operate in Jordan, he said, among them 192 local and 11 international companies employing approximately 21,000 workers.

In the first half of 2022, Jordan received approximately 450,000 parcels from global e-commerce platforms.

These figures “illustrate the great role of the postal sector and its workers”, the director noted.

In 2005, the TRC issued the first licenses for both a private local mail operator and a private international mail operator.

According to the commission, Jordan has advanced by 13.2 points in the Universal Postal Union’s Postal Development Report, achieving 32.5 points for the year 2021.
The report, which measures the performance of 172 countries, evaluates the development of the postal sector based on four criteria: reliability, reach, relevance, and resilience.

For the year 2021, Jordan received 48.9 points for reliability, 25.77 points for reach, 0.96 for relevance, and 46.51 points for resilience.
