The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has begun issuing Internet of Things (IoT) licenses.
Four firms have been granted Internet of Things licenses, and the list of approved IoT operators has been updated on the telecom regulator’s website.
Noby Solutions (Private) LTD, IoT Technologies (SMC-Private) LTD, LCC Pakistan (Private) LTD, and WeatherWalay (Private) LTD have all been granted Internet of Things licenses by PTA, according to the organization’s website. The four businesses each have a five-year license that can be renewed upon its expiration.
PTA states that it has licensed four companies to deploy and operate an IoT Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) to provide LPWAN Services in Pakistan under Section 5 of the Pakistan Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the PTA Regulatory Framework for Short Range Devices (SRD) & Terrestrial Internet of Things (IoT) Services. All four companies have received the Internet of Things licenses after meeting the authority’s criteria.
All operators are obliged by PTA to report any network expansions to PTA, including the installation or addition of Gateways, and to give any other information as may be requested by PTA at any time. Providers of Internet of Things solutions typically leverage the connection offered by preexisting cellular mobile carriers, negating the need to set up a new base station.
However, the operator must get PTA clearance before installing the new Gateways if the new base station is necessary to be installed for technical reasons. This base station will be registered with Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) through PTA.
In February of this year, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority published a Regulatory Framework for Short Range Devices (SRD) and Terrestrial Internet of Things (IoT) Services. To aid in the growth of Pakistan’s IoT ecosystem, this framework establishes a regulatory framework for the sector. Smart city systems and digital services like smart homes, smart meters, transit, etc. all rely on IoT, which is one of the primary technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
