Azercell, Azerbaijan’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscriptions, has completed the first stage of the expansion and modernisation of its network.
The company announced the large-scale project at the beginning of August and has since upgraded 250 base transceiver stations (BTS) in Beylagan, Aghjabadi, Lerik, Gusar, Guba, Fuzuli, Astara, Sheki and Yardimli.
Over the next 18 months the company plans to deploy more than 300 new BTS and upgrade 1,600 sites throughout the country, increasing the total number of 4G BTS to more than 3,200.
The company is also expanding its footprint in territories reclaimed by Azerbaijan during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, and has now launched mobile services in Zabukh, Sus and other villages following the deployment of eleven BTS in Lachin district. Azercell already covered the regions of Shusha, Aghdam, Fizuli, Jabrayil, Zangilan, Gubadli and Kalbajar, the settlements of Istisu, Hadrut, Sugovushan, as well as villages in Khojavend and other districts by means of 80 BTS.
