Mobile phone imports drop 91% in Egypt

The value of Egypt’s imports of mobile phones fell by 91% during the month of May to record US$12.983 million, compared to US$145.183 million during the same month of 2021.

The foreign trade bulletin issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed a decrease in the value of mobile imports by 58.3%, with a value of 438.9 million dollars, during the first 5 months of 2022.

The value of Egypt’s imports of mobile phones decreased to $313.3 million during the period “January-May 2022” compared to $752.203 million, as mobile phones accounted for 12.7% of the total imports of consumer durables during the first 5 months of 2022, and about 0.8% of the total Egyptian imports during that period.

Last November, the Official Gazette published Presidential Decree to amend some categories of customs tariffs, which included the imposition of customs duties for the first time on mobile phone devices or any other wireless networks, amounting to 10%.

The bill for importing mobile devices decreased by 41.4% during the first quarter, to about $273,656 million dollars, compared to $467,284 million dollars during the same quarter of 2021.

The value of Egypt’s imports of mobile phones witnessed a decline of 7.7% during 2021, to record $1.619 billion, compared to $1,754 billion during 2020, a decrease of $134,944 million.
