MTN Nigeria pilots 5G ahead of commercial launch

MTN Nigeria launched an open 5G pilot ahead of its commercial launch making it one of very few operators to offer 5G on the continent.

In a statement, MTN said it is putting its next-generation infrastructure through its paces by enabling certain customers with 5G-enabled devices to connect to it. The operator is taking preorders for routers and mobile phones from its walk-in stores, website and online marketplaces.

For its commercial launch, MTN will initially connect areas in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri, and Maiduguri.

“5G has the potential to change everything. It will allow us to connect, create, collaborate, and compete in ways we’ve not even begun to imagine,” said MTN Nigeria CMO Adia Sowho.

“We appreciate the unwavering support and leadership of the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy and the Nigerian Communications Commission in implementing the National Policy on 5G Networks for Nigeria’s Digital Economy, which has driven the implementation of 5G in the country. We’re honoured to be a part of this revolution and being the first to bring 5G to Nigeria we are truly excited about all the possibilities for the nation,” she added.

MTN Nigeria won 5G airwaves alongside Mafab Communications, with both spending around US$274 million. A condition for the winners was to roll out 5G services this month, a deadline Mafab recently was given an extension for.
