Vodafone ploughs US$25 million into Fijian network upgrade

Vodafone Fiji CEO Pradeep Lal has announced that his company plans to invest a further FJD55 million (USD25 million) in its network infrastructure with areas targeted including eBanking services for those without traditional banking services, eTransport, eCommerce, education/health care services, and Internet of Things (IoT). Lal added that satellite-based solutions will form a key pillar to the initiative and confirmed that a total of 36 satellite projects have been completed as part of this initiative with another ten ‘in progress’. Since the turn of the millennium Vodafone Fiji claims to have built ‘a robust network infrastructure to deliver the latest, faster, more reliable internet and Wi-Fi services to Fijians’. The CEO noted that the company is looking to transform itself from a traditional telco to a leading provider of new generation connectivity and digital services.

Lal went on to state that rural and maritime areas will benefit from the build-out of 20 new sites as his company meets demand for data – which has experienced a five-fold increase in traffic in recent years. On average, data traffic is increasing by up to 50% annually and this latest upgrade ‘demonstrates the size and capacity of Vodafone’s network to handle the increased demand’. Vodafone Fiji claims to have more than 500,000 data subscribers connected on its network with monthly usage exceeding 10,000TB and growing.
