German fiber-optic infrastructure operator 1&1 Versatel has announced plans to expand its activities in Berlin by creating around 20,000 connection points in the capital by 2030. The connection points are commercial areas and schools, as well as hospitals, local authorities and public institutions. The fibre-optic network is to be expanded continuously from the switching centres to the house connections and, if possible, into the building. 1&1 Versatel is working in cooperation with the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises to support the state of Berlin in its gigabit strategy.
‘At 1&1 Versatel we are proud of our fibre-optic network in Berlin, which is already very well developed. We are pleased to expand it in line with the state’s gigabit strategy and thus make an important contribution to Berlin’s digital future. It is particularly important to us to take Berlin’s schools with us on the way to the gigabit age,’ said Soren Trebst, CEO of 1&1 Versatel.
