South African data centre announcements are coming thick and fast. After the recent news from Africa Data Centres comes another initiative, this time focused on edge services, from Open Access Data Centres (OADC), which says it plans to launch nine more edge locations in South Africa.
Open Access Data Centres, a WIOCC Group company, has announced plans to deploy edge data centres in Pietermaritzburg, New Germany, Mount Edgecombe, Beaufort West, Paarl, George, Kimberley, East London, and Brits over the next few months. By the end of August 26 OADC edge data centres will be live, growing to 100 by the end of 2022.
According to the Data Centre Dynamics website, Pietermaritzburg, New Germany and Mount Edgecombe are already live. OADC also owns a 5MW, 2,200 square metre core data centre in Durban.
OADC says the 26 edge facilities offer colocation, rooftop access and high-speed network interconnectivity between facilities at up to 100Gbps and on multiple routes for diversity.
OADC is deploying, or planning to deploy, open-access, Tier III hyperscale data centres at major cable landing locations and in key business hubs throughout Africa. Its edge data centres, meanwhile, are being deployed into smaller locations, serving the ongoing need to support service providers in extending network reach, and the growing requirement for content storage, processing and delivery at the network edge.
In South Africa rollout is continuing into key connectivity hubs, with new 2-3MW, Tier III OADC facilities coming online in Johannesburg and Cape Town during Q3 2022.
The company’s second core data centre is to open in Lagos later this year. The Equiano subsea cable will land directly in this data centre. The current roadmap also includes Accra, Abidjan, Kinshasa, Mogadishu, Mombasa, Nairobi and other cities in Nigeria.
