Coolpad and Tencent Cloud Reach Agreement on Operating System Laboratory

Telecom equipment maker Coolpad and Tencent’s cloud arm signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Shenzhen. The two sides will set up a joint laboratory to conduct in-depth research into operating systems, cloud storage, cloud computing and other fields based on Tencent Cloud’s stable and secure cloud infrastructure and Coolpad’s industry insight.

Qin Tao, Senior Vice President of Coolpad, spoke about the development of the relationship of the companies: “The future focus of operating system lies in improving the efficiency of bit charging capacity. Through this cooperation with Tencent Cloud, we will combine cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, cloud and AI to focus on exploring the next generation of operating systems.”

Coolpad was founded in April 1993 and gained substantial market share in the Chinese smartphone industry with its self-developed Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) technology. Coolpad was able to take the lead once it entered overseas markets such as Europe, America and Japan. Since the end of 2020, the company has started to return its focus to the Chinese market and is positioning itself as a comprehensive digital enterprise. It has rebuilt its operations and management team while formulating new market avenues, products and brand strategies.

When the new COOL 20 Pro was released in December 2021, Coolpad announced that it would focus on the next generation of operating systems research.

Since its establishment in 1993, Coolpad has accumulated a large number of patents. At present, the company has set up a special R&D institute in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, with R&D personnel accounting for more than 70% of its staff. Since 2021, Coolpad has been focusing on the optimization of the underlying system.

The cooperation between Coolpad and Tencent Cloud has a long history. In the process of transformation from mobile phone manufacturing to innovative Internet-based businesses, Coolpad teamed up with Tencent‘s SaaS service operator “Qianfan” to build a non-invasive enterprise-level digital transformation solution.

In 2021, Coolpad, in conjunction with Tencent Cloud and Tencent Security Lab, launched a security mode on mobile phones to intelligently intercept telecom fraud, fake applications and other illegal behaviors such as inducing downloads. If users succumb to telecom frauds while in safe mode, they could be compensated up to 50,000 yuan ($7,854).
