Airtel Africa PLC said that it has linked 73% of its active customer base in Nigeria's national identification numbers to SIM registrations following a directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission on Dec. 7, 2020, but said the financial impact on the business is currently uncertain.
The telecommunications and mobile money-services provider said that via its experience of adopting similar measures in other countries, it thinks that SIM consolidation is likely to happen, potentially reducing any financial impact.
The company said it has collated 73% of the NIN information for its active customer base, accounting for around 79% of Nigeria revenue.
For the nine-month period to Dec. 31, Airtel Nigeria had an active customer base of 42.4 million and revenue of $1.37 billion.
The Nigerian Communications Commission on Dec. 7, 2020, required all telecom operators in the country to link the NIN information with the SIM of the respective subscribers.
