Lightpath to further expand Boston metro fiber network

Lightpath, the fiber-based connectivity provider and business services arm of Altice USA (NYSE: ATUS) in partnership with Morgan Stanley, says it will add 75 miles to its Boston metro fiber footprint. The Boston West expansion will run through the towns of Needham, Framingham, Westborough, and Marlborough and bring the company’s Boston area coverage to more than 200 route miles.

The new high-count fiber route will run along the I-90 corridor between Boston and Marlborough. As shown on the map above, the deployment will comprise two phases. Phase 1 of the build (in yellow on map) runs from Boston west and will be completed later in 2022. A proposed loopback to Boston (in red on map) would be targeted for completion in 2023. The eight new municipalities the fiber would add to the Lightpath network represent a serviceable business market of more than 2,000 organizations, the fiber network services provider states. The routes also will connect multiple area data centers, including those at 34 St. Martin Drive in Marlborough and 128 1st Avenue in Needham.

Lightpath says it will offer customers such all-fiber services as dark fiber, Optical Transport (up to 800 Gbps), Ethernet (to 10 Gbps), Internet Access (to 100 Gbps), Private Networks, cloud connectivity, Voice, Security Solutions, and other Managed Services. The new routes also will offer customers have access to the entire Lightpath network throughout Greater Boston as well as over 18,000 routes miles of network in New York Metro connecting over 12,000 locations, more than 75 data centers, and seven cable landing stations.

"As Lightpath continues to invest in the Greater Boston market, this latest network expansion will serve major business centers to the west of the city, while also adding access to critical data centers along the path," commented Chris Morley, Lightpath CEO. "Expanding to the west of Boston really complements our existing 150 route miles of network in the region."

The Boston West expansion is Lightpath's latest move in the Boston Metro market. The company acquired three local providers in the second quarter of 2021 as well as added 50 route miles north and west of the city in the fourth quarter of last year.
