96,414 base stations in Brazil, Anatel confirms

The National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel) has revealed that there are currently a total of 96,414 licensed base transceiver stations (BTS) in Brazil. Collectively, the country’s four largest mobile providers – Claro Brasil, Telefonica Brasil (Vivo), TIM Brasil and Oi – own more than 99% of the BTS. A total of 65,971 base stations utilise the 1800MHz band, with 55,215 using 2500MHz spectrum and 53,180 using 2100MHz frequencies.

In terms of Brazil’s state capitals, Florianopolis (Santa Catarina) has the highest density of base stations, with 9.68 cell sites per 10,000 inhabitants, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with a density of 7.29 per 10,000 people and Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul), which has 7.20 per 10,000 citizens.
