Telekom raises Berlin FTTH expansion target to 2 million connections

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile unit of Deutsche Telekom, has announced that it now plans to deploy two million fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connections in Berlin by 2030. Last year the firm said it was aiming to roll out one million fibre connections for the capital’s homes and businesses, but this original target is now expected to be achieved by 2026. Telekom completed the first 50,000 connections in 2021, and by 2024 the expansion is expected to gradually increase to 250,000 connections per year.

‘Berlin is a central hub of our continent. In order for the location to remain internationally competitive, a modern digital infrastructure is needed. We want to ensure that the people of Berlin and the local companies have access to the network of the future,’ stated Telekom Deutschland Board Member Srini Gopalan, adding: ‘We followed up our announcements with deeds, the expansion is progressing well. Now we’re increasing our promise to two million FTTH connections. In doing so, we support the Senate’s gigabit strategy and underscore Telekom’s position. We take responsibility for participating in a digital society.’

Telekom’s fibre-optic network covers more than 650,000km and the company passes more than 34.5 million households and companies with download speeds of up to 100Mbps via vectoring. In addition, more than three million households and company locations have access to a FTTH connection with bandwidths of up to 1Gbps.
