Filipino telco PLDT Inc. has announced that it has teamed up with global satellite operator Telesat to complete the first successful trials of high speed broadband connectivity using the Canadian-based firm’s Phase 1 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite.
Claiming a milestone, PLDT reported that the successful test was conducted between 11 February and 19 February using an ‘85-cm Intellian parabolic antenna’ located at the PLDT office in Greenhills, San Juan to connect to the LEO satellite. The trial reached speeds of 100Mbps/62Mbps down/uplink, and roundtrip latency of 26.53ms. The telco claimed the success of the LEO trial will open the door for both it and wireless arm Smart Communications to expand high speed mobile and internet services to more hard-to-reach communities across the archipelago.
