Morocco’s largest telecommunication operator, Maroc Telecom (IAM), announced reaching a customer base of 74 million clients at the end of 2021, a 1.8% year-to-year increase.
With a market footprint in 18 African countries, IAM turnover reached MAD 19.9 billion ($2.1 billion) in 2021, down by 4.7% from last year, according to a press release.
IAM’s accelerated investment during 2021 contributed to 15.3% of the company’s turnover, partly offset by the 1.5% growth of IAM’s Ivory Coast subsidiary, Moov Africa, according to the group’s statement.
In terms of offshore operations, IAM generated a turnover of MAD 16.9 billion ($1.7 billion) from a 1.5% year-on-year rise.
Earlier this month, data platform nPerf named the Moroccan telecommunication group the best internet provider in Morocco alongside Inwi.
In 2021, the Maroc Telecom Group made headlines after claiming the title of the best brand in Morocco, and the 13th best on the African continent, according to British consulting firm Brand finance.
The consultancy credits the ranking to Maroc Telecom’s improved product reliability over the past year. The company has equally managed to develop its offer in line with rising market needs amid the spread of COVID-19 and the social distancing measures it entailed.
The 2020 nationwide lockdown accelerated the trend of digital adoption in Morocco, positively impacting IAM’s customer base in terms internet demand. As people switched to remote working and learning, internet penetration in Morocco reached all-time high records, echoing international trends.
Internet penetration in Morocco reached 84.1% in 2020, according to some estimates, while other sources reckon the number has potentially exceeded the 90% threshold.
