Saab unveils UAE-developed deployable 5G network 'DeployNet'

Saab launched its DeployNet, a 5G ruggedised communication system for military and crisis operations, at this year's Unmanned System Exhibition and Simulation and Training conference (UMEX & SimTEX) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the company announced on 21 February.

According to the company, “DeployNet is a mission-ready deployable tactical 5G/LTE infrastructure providing a wireless network with high-capacity bandwidth in a flexible end-to-end solution built for the most challenging environments. ... It is scalable both in terms of user numbers and system range to provide a network for up to 6,500 users simultaneously, with a typical operation area of 100 km 2 per system (multiple frequency bands available).”

The compact system enables the rapid deployment of a secure broadband network – in remote areas – that delivers the transfer of data, and enables real-time video streaming and push-to-talk functionality, according to the announcement.

A Saab spokesperson told Janes that DeployNet was locally developed by Saab's subsidiary in the UAE, with discussions on-going with several potential customers.

In a separate announcement, the company also noted that the system was developed in co-operation with a telecoms partner. However, the spokesperson was unable to provide further information regarding this.

The spokesperson was also unable to provide detailed technical information surrounding the system, including the degree of protection the system provides from cyber threats.

The company created Saab in the UAE in 2018, with the intention of creating a capability centre for the development and production of defence and security products for the Middle Eastern country and the international market, the company stated in a separate announcement.
