Roku added 8.9 million active accounts in 2021, meaning the streaming service is now available to more than 60 million.
Much of the growth, that puts Roku ahead of the US video subscribers to all the cable companies combined, took place in the first half of the year. The company attributes this to global supply chain disruptions that impacted on US TV.
Some Roku TV OEM partners were hit particularly hard with inventory challenges, which negatively impacted their unit sales figures and market share in Q4.
Despite the shortages, sales of Roku TVs were only down 4% on the previous year when the company was enjoying a pandemic driven sales surge.
Viewing increased by 25% in the United States, and user engagement grew globally with streaming hours per active account per day of 3.6 hours, up from Q3 2021 and pre-COVID Q4 2019.
