Morocco’s telecommunication companies Inwi and Maroc Telecom (IAM) locked a gold medal for operators that provided their subscribers with the best mobile internet access in 2021.
Based on over 100,000 tests, Inwi claims the title once again for the fifth year, only this year Inwi is sharing the top spot with Morocco’s oldest service provider, Maroc Telecom, according to nPerf, an internet speed algorithm provider.
Morocco’s third telecommunication service provider, Orange, trailed behind across all the indexes within the ranking, comprising fixed-line networks and Mobile networks.
For fixed-line networks, the nPerf algorithm measures bitrates -- a rough unit of data transferred to a host device -- in terms of uploads and download speed, as well as internet latency -- the time it takes for data to go from source to destination.
Regarding mobile networks, the algorithm collects data on upload and download speed, as well as browsing and streaming performance. As a result, both the indicators represent the average user experience irrelevant to the package price.
The algorithm only collects data from 4G-compatible devices to avoid compromising data with outdated devices.
Internet penetration in Morocco stood at 84.1% in 2020, above the worldwide average of 59.5%, according to Statistica, a data platform.
With the digital economy at an all-time high, internet penetration is a reliable indicator of economic growth. In 2011, the rise in internet penetration accounted for 21% of the GDP growth occurring in mature economies over a five-year period, indicates a Mckinsey report.
In concrete terms, the internet has the potential to reduce the underlying cost of transactions related to the production and distribution of goods and services. In addition, widespread internet access translates into increased consumer choice and consumer satisfaction, explains a report by Brookings.
