Africell Angola makes first call on network

New mobile market entrant Africell Angola today announced making the first call on its network, ten months after being granted a unified telecommunications operator licence in the country. A press release said that the technical activation of the network paves the way for the phased launch of ‘5G-ready’ mobile services in 2022, while from today the company is beginning ‘the provision of data services to companies and public institutions‘ – initially serving ‘selected corporate customers in Luanda’ while monitoring and optimising the performance of the network.

Africell has already invested more than USD100 million in Angola, including the construction of physical infrastructure, and this investment rate is expected to accelerate in the coming months. The company plans to hire up to 2,000 direct and indirect employees by mid-2022, 95% of whom will be Angolan. Africell’s activities also support approximately 1,000 local jobs among suppliers and other third parties, its press release claimed.

Africell’s network coverage will initially focus on Luanda, and will later be extended to other regions including Lubango, Benguela and Lobito.
