Russia’s Rostelecom has given a progress update on its Universal Communication Services 2.0 (UCS 2.0) programme to deploy mobile broadband infrastructure in small settlements of 100-500 population in partnership with the telco’s cellular subsidiary Tele2 Russia.
LTE base stations have been deployed in 1,201 small settlements throughout Russia, exceeding Rostelecom’s end-year target (1,198 villages) for the UCS 2.0 project, which started in April. By 2030 the scheme aims to improve communications in 24,000 settlements. Base stations use the 2300MHz-2400MHz frequency range, connected via fibre-optic backhaul.
