World Mobile Group, under a partnership with Input-Output Global (IOG), has launched its internet balloon service to cover the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar.
The solar-powered aerostatic balloons act as floating base stations and will provide backbone connectivity for the company’s hybrid mobile network, which aims to expand coverage to remote areas and inshore fishing waters. Micky Watkins, CEO of World Mobile, said: ‘Zanzibar will become the world’s first smart region powered by World Mobile, connecting businesses, schools and society as a whole.’
