The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that it is set to supervise the country’s second proof of concept (PoC) trial of 5G technology on 2 December.
The trial will be conducted by Airtel Nigeria and its ‘original equipment manufacturer’ in Abuja. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, MTN became the first mobile network operator to trial 5G in Nigeria back in November 2019. The tests were conducted in Abuja, Calabar, Lagos, Kano, Abeokuta and Ibadan using trial spectrum in the 3.5GHz and 26GHz bands. The three-month trials were carried out in cooperation with the NCC and used equipment from various vendors, including Huawei (in Abuja), ZTE (Calabar) and Ericsson (Lagos), to enable the regulator to assess the performance of the technology, evaluate compliance with health and safety guidelines and to guide policy towards commercial deployment.
