The Colombian government expects to complete 17 fourth generation (4G) infrastructure projects next year.
Significant progress has already been made on the 4G concessions, including the construction of 458km of divided highways and extra lanes added to roads, and next year another 293km of roadway will be delivered, transport minister Ángela María Orozco said during the national infrastructure congress.
As part of the 4G projects, five tunnels have already been built and 20 more will be completed next year, in addition to 293 bridges and viaducts constructed so far and another 146 that will be put into service over the next 12 months.
Progress on the 4G program has now surpassed 60% and is expected to reach at least 80% by the end of President Iván Duque's government term in August 2022.
The minister also stated that Colombia’s economic and social policy council (Conpes) will be approving 5G infrastructure concessions until November 29, so the focus will shift towards structuring and awarding the projects.
The 5G concessions include road, airport, rail and river navigability projects.
In a recent interview with BNamericas, the president of Colombia's infrastructure agency (ANI), Manuel Felipe Gutiérrez, said that by the end of the government's term, the plan is to leave nearly 21bn pesos (US$5.3bn) in works awarded, another 20bn pesos of projects in the tender phase and the remainder (around 9bn pesos) in the structuring process.
