Subscribers of the country’s lone state-owned telecom operator Teletalk in Dhaka may receive fifth generation mobile phone service 5G on a limited scale by the year 2022.
Teletalk managing director Md Shahab Uddin disclosed the telecom operator’s plan at a workshop for journalists on ‘5G technology and Teletalk’s preparation’ held at its office in the city on Saturday.
He said that the operator would start the 5G service trial on December 12, 2021 with a view to understanding the complexities of running the service, among other things, and would open the service on a limited scale through 200 towers in Dhaka by 2022.
However, the limited-scale launching of the service would depend on regulatory approval.
The telecom operator would rollout the 5G service under a Tk 2,204.39-crore government project designed to expand Teletalk’s network at the village level and to modernise the existing network to provide 5G service.
The telecom operator was assigned to implement the project by 2023.
The telecom regulator has already allocated spectrum to the telecom operator for the trial.
So far, 175 telecom operators in different countries and regions have launched the service and are gradually expanding the extent of the service.
The 5G service would enable internet of things and fourth industrial revolution, among other features, by providing high internet speed at lower latency.
Teletalk deputy general manager Mohammad Razaul Karim Rizvi said that the 5G ecosystem would take a certain shape and continue to evolve by the year 2025 across the globe.
While the state-owed telecom operator is making preparations to start trials for the service, private telecom operators are seeking policy support, including the reduction of spectrum prices as the spectrum requirement would be very high in 5G.
Teletalk general manager SK Wahiduzzaman and deputy general manager Targhibul Islam, among others, spoke at the discussion.
