Mongolian mobile network operator (MNO) Unitel is looking to boost its rural network coverage via a deal with satellite operator Lynk Global. Unitel says the size and topography of Mongolia, coupled with a sparse but widespread population means that satellite connectivity is an ideal solution to achieve total network coverage.
Unitel CEO Enkhbat Dorjpalam commented: ‘We have unique needs for coverage in our country given our nomadic lifestyle and extremely large livestock population of more than 70 million animals, which is a critical component to our society’s growth and resiliency.’ Unitel is the second largest of Mongolia’s four MNOs, with an estimated 32% of the overall mobile market in terms of subscriptions, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.
