Tele2 Latvia to boost 5G network

Tele2 Latvia, a mobile network operator (MNO) in Latvia, has revealed its plans to expand its 5G network significantly.

The operator announced it will deploy hundreds of 5G base stations within three years, covering 99 percent of the country's population with the 5G network.

According to the operator, the 700 MHz frequency, which is expected to be auctioned in early December, will play a key role in the deployment of the 5G network. The greatest value of this frequency is that it can transmit the signal over a much wider area, as well as better reach devices located indoors.

“If our 5G network is currently available in 15 Latvian settlements, then next year this number of settlements could at least increase fivefold, as well as the number of base stations will increase in those cities where 5G base stations are already installed. This will allow an increasing number of people to use 5G, for example, as a basic technology for using mobile home Internet, ”said Liga Krumiņa, Director of the Technical Department of Tele2.

Tele2 representatives have previously acknowledged that for a long time to come, 4G technology will be the main "workhorse" in the mobile communications industry, which means that Tele2 will also continue to develop the 4G network, said the release. At the same time, work is underway to modernize Tele2's core network, which is an essential condition for a successful and high-quality 5G implementation.

Currently, 5G mobile communication base stations have been installed in Riga, Daugavpils, Jekabpils, Jelgava, Jurmala, Liepaja, Marupe, Saldus, Salacgriva, Sigulda, Talsi, Ogre, Olaine, Valmiera, and Ventspils.
