SpeedChecker, the mobile crowdsourcing company released a new report (September 2021) on the performance of mobile networks in Libya. This report is part of an ongoing commitment from SpeedChecker to benchmark true user experience. The SpeedChecker report has been compiled using data from 73,438 unique mobile devices performing 123,454 tests in 3 weeks in September 2021.
As Libya continues to recover from the civil war and subsequent unrest, consumers continue to struggle to get good quality mobile download speeds. Almadar Aljadeed and Libyana produced the best results with speeds of 5 Mb/s with the other providers struggling to get above 3 Mb/s.
The good news is that Libya has one of the lowest tariffs on the continent with state reductions of 50% on subscription charges. Planned improvements to the availability and performance of 4G and the implementation of 5G have been further delayed by the impact of Coronavirus.
There are signs of improvement and progress with a recent announcement that 4G equipment has arrived that will extend and improve 4G services in Ghat Al-Madinah, Al-Birkey and Tahalah. Libya is also working with Infinera in the US and with their counterparts in Egypt to improve the telecom infrastructure. These initiatives will serve to improve coverage, availability and quality of service over the short to medium term.
