T-Mobile delays CDMA shutdown by three months

T-Mobile US has extended the deadline for closing its legacy CDMA mobile network by three months to 31 March 2022.

The cellco’s press release claims that whilst it has ‘aggressively executed’ plans to transition remaining users of the group’s Sprint CDMA services to newer technologies by the end of 2021, the latest decision is aimed at allowing more time for third-party service providers operating over the CDMA network to complete the migration of their customers (e.g. Boost Mobile, owned by DISH, which began the migration process from Sprint to T-Mobile networks in July 2020 for users with compatible handsets, TeleGeography notes).

T-Mobile added: ‘This decision has no material financial impact to our business and the rapid pace of our 5G buildout will continue … we remain focused on pushing toward our goal of delivering game changing 5G Ultra Capacity to 200 million people by year end.’
