Ukraine bringing comms regulators in line with European standards

Ukraine is set to broaden the remit of its telecoms regulator NCCIR (National Commission for State Regulation of Communications & Informatization) as the country looks to align its legislation with Europe’s.

In a press release, The Ministry of Digital Transformation stated that the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament) has passed a bill that will see the NCCIR restructured as the National Commission for State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum & Postal Services, in order to “create preconditions for Ukraine’s entry into the Single European Digital Market.”

TeleGeography reports that the Ministry also plans to restructure another regulatory body - the State Service of Special Communications & Information Protection of Ukraine – with the first phase of its redevelopment to be “based on modern European approaches” and set to begin in January 2022.

A second phase is scheduled for completion by 2025, with the Ministry stating that it plans to focus the State Service on “cyber protection of critical infrastructure”, removing “unusual functions” from its remit.
