Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has announced a successful real-world trial which it claims to have ‘demonstrated the power and capability of its fibre-rich network by successfully delivering next-generation 2.2Gbps broadband speeds’. In a press release regarding the development, the operator revealed it had carried out the trials at premises in Edinburgh and Birmingham, powered by DOCSIS3.1 technology, saying the proof-of-concept trial had showcased the speeds which can be delivered in the future via its existing HFC network without the need for additional infrastructure or civil engineering works.
Commenting, VMO2’s chief technology officer Jeanie York said: ‘As the UK’s largest gigabit broadband provider, we’re always looking to go further and faster. With our latest multi-gigabit trial in Birmingham and Edinburgh, we’re putting this commitment to innovation into action, demonstrating the true power of our network and getting ready for the technology of tomorrow.’
