Telefonica on track to cover 50% of Germans with 5G by end-22

Telefonica Deutschland has confirmed that it is on track to reach 30% of Germans with 5G services by the end of this year and will increase coverage to 50% by the end of 2022.

To achieve this, the firm is investing around EUR4 billion (USD4.6 billion) in its operations and will focus on the rollout of 5G in the 3.5GHz band. To date, 3,000 3.5GHz antennas have been switched on, with around 180 going live each week. In addition, the firm has revealed that it is also rolling out 5G in the 700MHz frequency band to expand network coverage and to provide the basis of a 5G Standalone (5G SA) network.

‘As with 2G, 3G and 4G, we are also bringing 5G to Germany through rapid network expansion, network investments in the billions and products with the best price-performance ratio to the mass market,’ commented CEO Markus Haas, adding: ‘Since the beginning, we have been aligning the 5G expansion with the specific benefit for private customers and companies. This is how we most effectively advance the urgently needed digitisation for business and consumers. Today, one year after it was launched, our 5G network is already live in a hundred cities.’
