Vivo, Nokia launch 5G tests in Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian carrier Vivo has announced the start of 5G tests in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) of 26 GHz band in partnership with Finnish vendor Nokia.

According to local media reports, the trials will take place in Rio de Janeiro, in Vivo’s laboratory in Barra da Tijuca and two sites located in Barra and Recreio dos Bandeirantes. The tests have a specific license from Anatel, Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency, to enable 5G at 26 GHz.

The objective of the two companies is to observe which services can be developed with frequency, including fixed wireless access ( FWA ) or applications aimed at the corporate market.

"These tests are important for us to assess the performance and maturity of the technology and also what types of services can be launched, both for the B2B market and in solutions for the final consumer, contributing to the evolution of Vivo's 5G network in the country" the reports quoted Elmo Matos, director of network planning at Vivo as saying.
